Abstract:

Objective: This study aims to assess the clinical and radiological outcomes of treating intracapsular femoral neck fractures in elderly patients using cemented bipolar prosthesis.
Methods: Conducted in the Department of Orthopaedics, Pt. B.D Sharma PGIMS, Rohtak this study included 50 patients aged 55 years and above. Follow-up evaluations were carried out for a minimum period of one year. Clinical and radiological assessments were performed at each follow-up to analyze limb length discrepancies, post-surgical mobility, complications, and the time required for healing.
Results: Among the study population, 13 (26%) patients were in the 50–60 years age group, while 12 (24%) were between 71–80 years. The majority (25 patients, 50%) fell within the 61–70 years age bracket. The study included 35 (70%) male and 15 (30%) female participants. The mean age of male and female patients was 64.26±8.42 years and 63.07±7.43 years, respectively, with an overall mean of 62.38±7.33 years. An equal distribution of left and right-sided fractures (50% each) was observed. Slip and fall injuries were slightly more common (28 cases, 56%) compared to road traffic accidents (22 cases, 44%).
Conclusion: This study highlights that cemented bipolar prosthesis is an effective treatment for intracapsular femoral neck fractures in the elderly, providing early functional recovery with minimal complications. No mortality was reported during the study. The procedure is relatively simple, with low morbidity, fewer disabling complications, and early weight-bearing potential, reducing the need for secondary surgery.
